Facebook Addiction

Facebook. Ever heard of it? It would take some effort to not of heard about it, unless you live in a cave. It’s one of the largest growing trends of the last decade if not the biggest. Facebook is certainly the largest social networking site ever, and has over 750,000,000 visitors every month. No other website on the internet experiences this kind of web traffic and this traffic is increasing every day with no signs of slowing down. Facebook has a general impact on everyone in today’s world. The impact might be small if you’re not a Facebook user, but on the same time you might see commercials daily. If Facebook has impacted your life greatly then you’re probably one of the 800 million users that use Facebook every day.
Something so big should only have a positive effect on our lives, right? It’s really a question that is up to you to answer. Facebook has become the in and out of peoples everyday lives. They wake up and they sign on to Facebook, to check their updates and to talk to friends, or maybe post what their planning to do that day. An hour later they go on with their lives but eventually end up back on Facebook later that day. To do the same thing they were doing before. Talk to friends, check their updates, and post a few comments about their day. It becomes a habit and it’s unavoidable, but is this a bad thing? Once again this is a question that you can only answer for yourself.
You might have a good time talking to your friends online but is it really the same as talking in person, or on the phone. In some way you are certainly separated and you might not communicate like you normally do. This might not be noticeable at first but when you get in the habit of using Facebook every day, it’s unavoidable. Facebook really gives you the opportunity to be an entirely different person. Not only when talking with their friends but your profile page can also be misleading. Many businesses today observe your profile page before hiring you, and many of your pictures and comments can easily mislead them from who you really are. Facebook gives you a very unprofessional image most of the time, depending on your profile page. This is because you use Facebook just as it was created for; to socialize with your buddies and to post photos of you hanging out with their friends. Your business life is much better off without your social life intruding.
Communicating through Facebook is very closely associated with text messaging. Many people would rather text people than call them, because it’s more convenient. Is it truly the same though, or is it cutting down our personal communication with people? Answer this question for yourself because in our world today there is no right answer. People’s preferences overcome what they think the right answer it is. Whatever is easier is better.
Facebook isn’t all for the bad though, obviously. It also has many positive sides to it too which is why it has made it so far in our world in the first place. Facebook has achieved a goal like no other, it has connected everyone together. There is no such thing as losing connection to an old friend anymore because he or she is only a click away. The communication might not be the same as talking in person but the connection is more or less there. Older generations never had a chance to experience this like newer generations. Many people who didn’t grow up in the internet age are now reconnecting with old friends and colleagues. This opportunity is certainly one of Facebook great achievements and of course is a reason for its great popularity. As the majority of its popularity lies with college students and high school students this could change in the future.
What Facebook also does is that it keeps you in the loop. Everyone’s birthday is listed on the day of their birthday, local events are also listed. You can now simply invite your friends to a planned event to hang out. It has never been so easy to socialize with people. Facebook is extremely useful when you use the tools it has to offer. Over doing it is when Facebook becomes more of an addictive drug than a social networking website. People have Facebook implanted in their schedule every day, for life.
Could Facebook lose some of its content that it offers which is so distracting? Could Facebook concentrate more on its actual purpose which is to be a social networking site? Facebook will always have plenty of ads on its pages because that’s how it makes money of course, but what about the games. These addictive games are well known to be very hard to walk away from once you start using them. There the ultimate distraction to anyone with some free time. Such games made famous by Facebook are Mafia and Farmville. The multiple accessories in these games keep you hooked until the very bottomless end. There really is no surprise that people use Facebook every day of every week. Facebook isn’t just their social website but it’s there gaming website as well.
...If your looking for a social networking site that isn't as distracting as Facebook there's a ton of them out there. Check out miface.org for example. A social networking site that's a little bit more simpler than Facebook...But of course no offense to Facebook!
